Carrie’s YA Bookshelf Review

January 28, 2010

This book was really adorable. I wasn’t sure what to expect when it was offered to me for review, but I really enjoyed it. I read it when my grandmother was in the hospital and it was the perfect dose of cute and funny to keep me going when I wasn’t too great. Sometimes you just need a laugh to keep you going and Mia provided that much needed humor.

She’s a great character. The dialogue is quick and witty and yet believable. Mia felt like a real person, which made her so incredibly likeable. I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times.

This is a great series and I’d recommend it to just about anyone. I think I was assuming it would be just for MG readers, but I think any age would enjoy Mia and her adventures or misadventures in most cases. I’m going to go back and read the first couple books in the series, but you could totally jump into this one and know exactly what’s happening.

Mia is indeed magnificent!!

MariReads Review of Mia the Magnificent

January 26, 2010

Mia the Magnificent is the third book in The Mia Fullerton Series by Eileen Boggess. Having not read the two previous books. Mia the Meek and Mia the Melodramatic, I feared that it would be hard to get into this one. This was not the case. This could easily be read and enjoyed without having read the previous books.

Mia is a sophomore at St. Hilary’s. She has a couple ex boyfriends to deal with, a best friend getting over a break up, the school musical and driver’s ed. She manages her way through it all with a good sense of humour and faith that all will turn out well in the end.

Eileen Boggess has written a very good series for teens with all the drama of high school minus the drugs, drinking and sex that parents might not want their children reading about. If you are looking for an entertaining, more innocent look at high school (Catholic Private School) this is a good choice.

Quad City Times Article

January 23, 2010

David Burke of the Quad City Times wrote a nice article about me and my penchant for wrecking my family members’ cars. The link is http://www.qctimes.com/lifestyles/leisure/article_d4057304-e4e9-11de-9e39-001cc4c03286.html

Just like Mia, the heroine of her trilogy of young adult novels, Eileen Boggess wasn’t at ease behind a steering wheel.

“I’ve had my fair share of car crashes,” the Davenport native recalled. “When I was a teenager, I crashed two of my parents’ cars, totaling both of them.
“I was not the best driver.”

A similar fate awaits “Mia the Magnificent” in a book that was released on the first of this month. The character, which Boggess has brought from junior high to high school, has just gotten her driver’s license — but she gets in a traffic accident that leaves her with a broken leg and a sprained ankle.

“She went from being totally independent with this feeling of ‘I can drive’ to making her completely dependent on every single person,” Boggess said.
Boggess’ husband broke both legs at once in high school, and she uses some of his experiences as well, the author said.

The daughter of Pat and Bonnie Burke of Davenport, the Davenport Assumption grad has her own 15-year-old daughter, as well as a 12-year-old son, for inspiration. “It’s fun to sit and listen to she and her friends talk and think, ‘That may go in the book,’” Boggess said.

A former intermediate school teacher, Boggess has begun a new job as the head of the food pantry in Urbandale, Iowa, where she and her family live.

She has a few plans for a fourth book, based on her own experiences as a camp counselor, to be called “Mia the Maniac.”

Writing the same characters has its pros and cons, she said. “The easy part is that I know the characters so well. I know exactly what Mia’s going to say,” Boggess said. “The hard part is saying, ‘Oh wait, Mia already did that.’ ”

Review from up North

January 23, 2010

I have just started the Mia the Meek series and am half way through the first book, I absolutely can’t put it down! I absolutely love how you portray the characters and I love the relationship between Mia and Tim. At first when my mom gave me the book I was afraid that I might not like it (I had never heard of it at the time) so my mom told me to read the inside for she thought it sounded good! Once I read what it was about I quickly opened it up and read the first chapter and LOVED it!

I finished the second book last night (I couldn’t put it down, I only started it the day before.) I also find your books funny, it’s fun seeing the tricks Mia and Chris do to each other (I have a little brother too, and we dont always get along) I cant wait to read the 3rd book and of course the 4th when it comes out!

I just want you to know it’s my favourite series and I along with many other fans would love for you to continue writing the series! Best of Luck! Thank you for the wonderful read,

That Chick That Reads Review of Mia the Magnificent

January 22, 2010

This novel is so cute! It’s part of a series and told from Mia’s point of view. She’s a sophomore in high school who is barely coming out of her shell, so she auditions for the school play. While having to deal with obnoxious ex boyfriends, over protecting parents, and a set of awesome friends, we can totally see the extradonory transformation Mia makes from the beginning to the end of the book. Boggess does an excellent job delievering a very hilarious yet insipirt storym where young people, even adults such as myself, could walk away from it and learn something as powerful as the unity of friendship, the strength of family and the innocence of being in love. This novel made me laugh and totally empathize with Mia when needed. It is really an excellent novel as well as a must read! Can not wait until the next book comes out!

Katrina’s “Bloody Bad” Bloody Good Review

January 19, 2010

This is a very cute, wholesome book that is great for tweens looking forward to their high school years. Mia was a great character who does some dramatic changing as the story progresses. She has to deal with, not only over protective parents, but being in the school musical, learning to drive and two ex-boyfriends. Although Mia stumbles along the way she manages to make sophomore year and herself Magnificent.

Mia the Magnificent is book three in the Mia Fullerton series, following Mia the Meek and Mia the Melodramatic. I always like to read a series in order (it is the organizer in me) but I didn’t feel like I missed anything by reading Mia the Magnificent first. There were times action from the other books were mentioned but it never truly distracted from the reading and things were easy to figure out.

If you enjoy girl power books aimed at tweens, read the Mia Fullerton series.

Review from Melody’s Reading Corner

January 19, 2010

I have not read anything by Eileen Boggess, so when Bancroft Press offered me an opportunity to review this book, I said yes because the premise sounds like a fun read to me, and don’t you think that cover is colourful and eye-catching?

Mia The Magnificent is actually the third instalment of Eileen Boggess’ Mia Fullerton series. In this book, sixteen-year-old Mia has already battled over her shyness and acquired new confidence from the previous two instalments – Mia the Meek and Mia the Melodramatic but there are more adventures and new challenges awaiting her in this instalment and this time around, she has to prove to herself that she could be an independent girl regardless if it is a lead role she has to play in a school musical, learning to drive, dealing with an ex-boyfriend who seems to be giving her all the mixed signals, and not to mention her over-protective parents and a few issues that are tossed into her path.

Despite I have not read the first two instalments, I still enjoyed reading this book. Mia is a great character; she has a zest for life and I liked the way she always stay true to herself despite the peer pressures she has to face at times.

Another thing I liked about this book is the witty dialogues. There isn’t a dull moment as Mia and her friends kept me entertained throughout the story. Eileen Boggess managed to capture the emotions of the characters (and the scenarios) well which I am sure most tweens would be able to relate to.

All in all, I had a great reading experience and it makes me wonder what would be in store for Mia in the next installment.

Heyteenager.blogspot.com Review

January 17, 2010

This is Steph Bowe’s, Hey! Teenager of the Year Review of Mia the Magnificent:

Mia the Magnificent is the third novel in the Mia series, and though I haven’t read the previous two, the story was easy to follow and worked well as a novel on its own. Mia is a lovable and relatable heroine, and the book is filled with funny one-liners and plenty of ridiculously hilarious plotlines. I think this novel will be enjoyed by both middle grade and Young Adult readers – the issues in it are especially pertinent to younger readers. Hopefully older readers won’t be turned off by the more juvenile cover. Anyone looking for a funny teen read will love it.

I wished I could have gotten to know the supporting characters a little better (Zoe was one character who I really liked, but didn’t see enough of) but hopefully there will be more about them in the Mia books to come. All of the characters were very funny and unique, and Mia especially grew as a character through the course of the book. The book ends on a cliffhanger, that will definitely leave readers wanting more.

Mia the Magnificent is an absolutely hilarious novel that I recommend to middle grade & YA readers looking for a fun read with a lot of heart.

Great Mia the Meek Review from Sharonlovesbooksandcats.com

January 15, 2010

One word, super cute! Well that is two words but you get my drift.

Mia the Meek is a middle grade novel and as such was a rather fast read for me. It is not the type of book I would suggest to older teens, but I think that the 9-13 year old female crowd would enjoy it. Mia is very much the type of character that I can relate to. Her awkwardness was endearing, and very often funny.

In a world that sends mixed messages to young girl the character of Mia was refreshing to see. Mia is not the type of girl to dumb herself down or spend all her time worrying about hair and makeup. Mia will always be a bit on the shy side but she learns how to use this to her own advantage. This is totally the type of message I would want my young daughter to be receiving, that life isn’t always about being the prettiest or most popular. I would highly recommend Mia the Meek to the middle age crowd!

I received the next two books in the series for review and I cannot wait to dive into them!

Review from Mom of Middle Grade Student

January 12, 2010

My daughter and I are anxiously waiting for your new book to arrrive at Barnes and Noble. My daughter is NOT a big fan of reading (she is NOT into Twilight..can you believe it?), and finding a book for her, that she likes to read, is very difficult…..She does, however, really enjoy your books and is wanting to read your book as soon as it hits the shelves!!!! So…THANK YOU, Eileen, for writing a great series!
